Tareq Mahmud is a public health researcher with a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Public Health and Informatics from Jahangirnagar University, where he achieved a CGPA of 3.93 out of 4.00, and a Bachelor of Public Health in the same discipline, completed with a CGPA of 3.70 out of 4.00. His research interests center on epidemiology, with a particular focus on environmental exposures — including air pollution and heavy metals — and their links to non-communicable diseases and population health outcomes.
He brings strong analytical capabilities across Stata, SPSS, and R, with experience in longitudinal and cross-sectional data analysis, GIS-based spatial analysis, and the management of both primary and secondary datasets. His work spans study design, data cleaning and coding, statistical modelling, and translating complex datasets into evidence that supports research and policy conclusions.
He has contributed to 7+ peer-reviewed publications in international Q1 and Q2 journals so far, covering a range of public health topics including adolescent mental health and wellbeing across multi-country cohorts, sexual and reproductive health among university students, youth behavioral health screening, social media use and eating disorders, public knowledge of emerging infectious diseases, and tobacco control policy using GIS methods.
Beyond research, he held progressive leadership roles at the Jahangirnagar University Science Club, culminating in his election as President. In this role, he expanded the club's reach and impact across the university through structured training and skill-development programs, introduced new initiatives to strengthen the club's research and technical capacity, built partnerships to support its activities, and mentored science clubs at other universities to help them grow and develop.
Looking ahead, his research interest lies in advancing understanding of environmental health risks — particularly air pollution and heavy metal exposure — in low- and middle-income country contexts, with the broader vision of generating evidence to inform practical, policy-relevant solutions to reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases and improve population health.
